Bedfordshire Integrated Dermatology Service

Dated: 30-Jun-16

Bids

The Bedfordshire Integrated Dermatology Service (BIDS) is commissioned by the Bedfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group (BCCG), to deliver high quality dermatology services for patients across Bedfordshire.

We are a specialist provider of NHS services for skin related conditions, known as dermatology. Our support team provide an efficient referral and treatment service enabling you to be seen in a community setting with quicker access to treatment in a clinic closer to home and avoiding the need for a hospital appointment.

Further information about the service can be accessed on our website www.bedsdermatology.co.uk.

What happens when you are referred to the service?

The referral process:

  1. The referral is received by our service
  2. One of our team of Dermatologists (Doctors who specialises in treating skin conditions) will go through all the information your GP has provided. They will then direct your referral for the most appropriate treatment care for your skin condition to one of the following:
    • A face to face appointment with a clinician or dermatologist at one of our community clinics
    • A direct your referral to a hospital of your choice should the dermatologist specify this is the best treatment option for you.
    • A ‘teledermatology’ appointment – teledermatology is also known as Skin Photography. This allows a further assessment using specialist dermatology cameras. The further assessment may provide one of the following:
      • A treatment plan back to your GP. For example, with some conditions the information provided by your GP enables the dermatologist to provide specialist advice back to your GP so that they can continue to manage your care.
      • A face to face appointment
      • A referral to a hospital should the dermatologist specify this treatment option after further assessment
  3. An appointment is arranged by the administration team within 10 working days of the of the referral being sent by your GP. Our dermatology services are run from clinics across the Bedfordshire area. A map of our clinics can be found on our website at www.bedsdermatology.co.uk.
  4. After your assessment or appointment we will inform your GP about your treatment and care. We will also send a copy of the letter to you.
