We offer:

  • Working as part of a Training practice, committed to learning and developing the whole team
  • Excellent terms and conditions - BMA Contract
  • Working over two sites within Leighton Buzzard
  • Working within a skill mixed team including a large nursing department and Clinical Pharmacists
  • Support from excellent staff and organisational systems – SystmOne – with very high QOF scores and an excellent prescribing record

Our Practice interests include:

  • Training- students, GP trainees and Nurses
  • Sexual Health Clinics
  • Minor Ops Clinics
  • Joint injection Clinics
  • Chronic Disease Clinics including Diabetes Clinics
  • Maternity Hub with Midwives and Ultrasound on site
  • Clinical research and trials including QOF pilot studies
  • Looking after the full spectrum of General Practice including the elderly in care homes and plenty of babies and young families

Leighton Road Surgery is a friendly, well organised training practice.  We are located in the semi-rural town of Leighton Buzzard which has excellent commuter links to London and Milton Keynes and is situated on the border of Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire. Therefore we are ideally located to refer to Luton & Dunstable, Milton Keynes General and Stoke Mandeville Hospitals. Leighton Road Surgery holds a GMS contract with Bedfordshire CCG and we are the largest practice in the area covering over 22,500 patients. Our patient population is varied; we have lots of young families but also serve a growing elderly population.  The town and surrounding villages are fairly affluent with some pockets of deprivation giving way to varied presentations and pathologies. Leighton Road Surgery is a high QOF achieving practice- this year we were just short of 100%.

Our team is growing with over 70 members. With this comes a specialist skill set including Nurses who have an interest in long term conditions and Doctors who specialise in areas ranging from Rheumatology to Gynaecology. We are a 3 Partner practice with numerous salaried doctors.

Training and education are paramount to us second only to excellent patient care.

We have 2 trainers but our entire team gets involved with tutorials and the supervision of Registrars. We accept VTS trainees From Milton Keynes and Aylesbury and Medical students from UCL and Buckingham University.

We pride ourselves on being a practice who is committed to the development of our staff. We have daily lunch time meetings to discuss cases, referrals, have a chit chat and eat! CPD time is factored into the timetable.

We are a very innovative practice, always thinking of ways to improve and enhance our services.  We are currently taking part in the Clinical Pharmacist Pilot; we have 2 Clinical Pharmacists and are very involved in clinical trials.

We thrive to ease the workload of our GPs by using our non-clinical staff to manage correspondence, summarising, completion of insurance forms, tasks from blood results etc where appropriate. This gives the clinicians’ time to manage patients and maintain a healthy work-life balance. We also use our IT system and knowledge of SystmOne to our advantage, maximising the use of integrated templates and referral forms and striving to be as paper light as possible.

We currently have 2 sites - the smaller one is used for duty days whereas the larger site serves all routine clinics and is home to other local services such as Bedfordshire Wellbeing Service, Counselling, Midwifery Hub for the locality, Diabetes clinics, Sphere / THT / Brook (sexual health). We also run very popular daily drop-in blood clinics.

We provide extended hours; currently this is two evenings per week and one Saturday morning per month.

If you are interested in working with us, please contact Judith Lakin on 01525 372571 for more information or email judith.lakin@nhs.net with an up to date c.v. and a brief covering letter.

Informal enquiries and visits welcomed. We are happy to accept applications from GPs who will qualify in 2018.
